Product description
CENTRIA insulated metal panels (IMPs) consist of polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam between two sheets of galvanized and/or stainless steel. Several configurations of IMPs exist depending on where and how they are used (e.g. building walls, roofs, cold storage, etc.) and the styling as desired by the architect. Additionally, IMPs can be manufactured either on a continuous or discontinuous manufacturing line. CENTRIA panels are comprised of an advanced PIR core that is injected between two pre-finished steel sheets, forming a single, all-in-one unit. The result is a highly thermal efficient insulated panel. Finished panels are mounted to the building's framework, outboard of the structural supports and provide continuous insulation with no thermal bridges for maximum thermal efficiency. CENTRIA panels meet or exceed code requirements for foam plastic insulation.
Information for CENTRIA Versawall panels was supplied by one (1) Nucor IPG facility located in Sheridan, AR, USA.
IMP are used for exterior wall and roof cladding systems as well as interior ceilings and wall partitions. They are installed in an array of industries including automotive, food production, EV battery plants, data centers, aviation, storage facilities, stadiums, healthcare, education, manufacturing, warehousing and more. IMPs are available in variety of configurations depending on the customer’s requirements, including panel profile, thickness, module, paint system and color.
In addition, Nucor manufactures steel to various customer-specific standards. The IMP core thickness varies according to building site. Therefore, this EPD reports LCA results for each thickness separately.
CENTRIA’s architectural insulated metal panels deliver the industry's best combination of aesthetics, performance, sustainability and value. These lightweight panels provide tremendous flexibility with long lengths, various finish options and superior weather resistance, as well as horizontal and vertical installation capability. These panels are the ideal product to create a modern aesthetic for buildings like healthcare, offices, industrial facilities, schools and shopping centers.
This EPD is for Econiq™ RE CENTRIA Formawall Insulated Metal Panels, meaning that it accounts for Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) used to balance the impacts associated with grid electricity use for production of the IMP product. The data represented in this EPD is for a limited production volume (1,000 square meters) in 2025. Moving forward, Nucor will complete an annual end of year review with Smart EPD of actual RECs purchased and retired over the previous calendar year and update the EPD as needed. The RECs will be purchased and retired during the same period as represented by the EPD.
Interpretation
In order to facilitate a more detailed understanding of the contributions from different processes, an analysis is included in this section which details the contribution from Modules A1, A2, and A3.
The impact assessment results indicate that Module A1, i.e. Raw Materials, is the largest contributor to potential environmental impact categories for global warming potential, ozone depletion potential, acidification potential, eutrophication potential, smog formation potential, and abiotic resource depletion potential of fossil energy resources. Module A2, i.e. transport to IPG, and Module A3, i.e. manufacturing at the IPG facility, are not the most significant contributor to any impact category.
The use of renewable energy through EACs resulted in a 10.0-10.3% reduction in the A1-A3 GWP impacts.
LCIA results are relative expressions and do not predict impacts on category endpoints, the exceeding of thresholds, safety margins or risks. EPDs are comparable only when they follow the same PCR, functional unit and system boundary. The full EPD (PDF) contains the methodology, scenario assumptions and verification statement.
