Product description

Metl-Span ThermalSafe® insulated metal panel (IMP) consists of non-combustible mineral wool between two sheets of cold rolled galvanized and/or stainless steel. Several configurations of IMPs exist depending on where and how they are used (e.g. exterior building wall and interior partitions and ceilings) and the styling as desired by the architect.

ThermalSafe® combines advanced panel design with Metl-Span's sophisticated manufacturing expertise to create a composite panel with a core made from non-combustible structural mineral wool boards that are processed in the factory to maximize compressive strength. The resulting fire rated panel has superior structural characteristics and span capability. Metl-Span has created this mineral wool panel to achieve a one-, two- or three-hour fire resistance rating under the most demanding conditions. In addition to its fire resistance characteristics, the panel provides faster installation times and protection from the elements. The unique LockGuard® interlocking side joint further enhances the fire-resistant performance of the panel with its tongue and groove engagement of the mineral wool core.

IMPs are used for exterior wall cladding systems, interior ceiling wall systems, partition walls, and more across an array of industries including agriculture, automotive, battery facilities, data centers, aviation, storage, entertainment, healthcare, education, manufacturing, warehousing, etc. IMPs are available in variety of configurations depending on the customer’s requirements, including panel profile, thickness, module, paint system and color.

In addition, Nucor manufactures steel to various customer-specific standards. The IMP core thickness varies according to building site. Therefore, this EPD reports LCA results for each thickness separately for each facility separately.

Thanks to their excellent fire ratings and weatherproofing characteristics, as well as their very competitive installed cost, Metl-Span panels are ideally suited to use in walls, ceilings and partitions for architectural, commercial, industrial and cold storage buildings of virtually any scale, in both new and retrofit construction. Successful applications include manufacturing facilities, warehousing and distribution centers; schools, sports complexes, museums and convention centers; corporate offices, banks and municipal buildings; retailing locations, including auto dealerships; aircraft hangars and service facilities; cold-storage and food-processing plants.

This EPD is for Econiq™ RE Metl-Span ThermalSafe® Mineral Wool Board Panels, meaning that it accounts for Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) used to balance the impacts associated with grid electricity use for production of the IMP product. The data represented in this EPD is for a limited production volume (1,000 square meters) in 2025. Moving forward, Nucor will complete an annual end of year review with Smart EPD of actual RECs purchased and retired over the previous calendar year and update the EPD as needed. The RECs will be purchased and retired during the same period as represented by the EPD.

Interpretation

In order to facilitate a more detailed understanding of the contributions from different processes, an analysis is included in this section which details the contribution from Modules A1, A2, and A3.

The impact assessment results indicate that Module A1, i.e. Raw Materials, is the largest contributor to potential environmental impact categories for global warming potential, ozone depletion potential, acidification potential, eutrophication potential, smog formation potential, and abiotic resource depletion potential of fossil energy resources. Module A2, i.e. transport to IPG, and Module A3, i.e. manufacturing at the IPG facility, are not the most significant contributor to any impact category.

The use of renewable energy through EACs resulted in a 1.4-4.5% reduction in the A1-A3 GWP impacts.

LCIA results are relative expressions and do not predict impacts on category endpoints, the exceeding of thresholds, safety margins or risks. EPDs are comparable only when they follow the same PCR, functional unit and system boundary. The full EPD (PDF) contains the methodology, scenario assumptions and verification statement.
