Product description

KEY EPOCOAT consists of a unique water based epoxy technology which allows the contractor to install epoxy resin floor systems and other moisture sensitive floor coverings on new concrete (5 days old) without fear of moisture entrapment. KEY EPOCOAT is typically applied in a two coat application. KEY EPOCOAT is the primer/basecoat used in various KEY EPOCOAT and KEY EPOCON Systems including KEY EPOCON SL. KEY EPOCOAT is a moisture tolerant, chemically enhanced epoxy resin which reduces the potentially adverse effects of moisture migration through and from concrete slabs on, above or below grade. Refer to the KEY EPOCON SL System Technical Data Sheet for additional information on the use of this moisture mitigation system to eliminate the potential for elevated levels of soluble salts and moisture in the concrete to cause osmotic activity and blister or delaminate polymer resin floor systems, epoxy terrazzo, floor coatings, and protecting other floor covering materials and adhesives including VCT, sheet vinyl, carpets, wood, laminates, etc. KEY EPOCOAT and KEY EPOCON SL are not solutions for concrete affected by ASR (alkali silica reaction) or NSAR (near surface alkali reaction), contact Key Resin Technical Service for details.

Interpretation

Raw materials are sourced from suppliers, transported to manufacturing facilities, and mixed to produce products. The product stage (A1-A3) drives the environmental impact, due to raw material production and energy use. This impacts is amplified in the use phase due to recoatings, making B4 the largest contributor to the overall impact. Market and Technical service life scenarios differ depending on assumed estimated service life (ESL), with lower impacts for longer-lived products. Those scenarios are constructed using PCR prescriptions that are highly conservative, as they assumed the replacement of the full coating system. End-of-life impacts are relatively low, as products are assumed to be landfilled with building demolition waste. Switching to renewable energy is advised for products with high manufacturing energy demands. The manufacturer should explore lower-impact raw materials and work with suppliers using sustainable methods or renewable energy to enhance product sustainability.

LCIA results are relative expressions and do not predict impacts on category endpoints, the exceeding of thresholds, safety margins or risks. EPDs are comparable only when they follow the same PCR, functional unit and system boundary. The full EPD (PDF) contains the methodology, scenario assumptions and verification statement.
