Product description
Easi-Lite® Infinaé™ CarbonLow™ is an innovative interior drywall panel designed to meet modern sustainability goals without compromising performance. Manufactured using advanced technology, it features up to 60% lower embodied carbon (cradle-to-gate), compared to traditional gypsum, it sets a new standard in environmentally responsible construction.
The panel is up to 30% lighter, making it easier to handle, transport, and install. It features a sag-resistant, non-combustible gypsum core wrapped in 100% recycled face and back paper, suitable for wall and ceiling applications with framing spaced up to 24" o.c.
It is ideal for both new construction and renovation projects, and supports environmentally conscious building practices. It meets key building codes including IBC, IRC, and NBCC, and is GREENGUARD Gold Certified for low VOC emissions.
Interpretation
Based on the results of the life cycle assessment model, the environmental impacts are strongly driven by the manufacturing stage. The overall impacts are primarily attributed to installation, raw material transportation, and raw material production. Installation is a significant contributor, accounting for up to 25% of the cradle-to-grave environmental impact potential of CertainTeed Easi-Lite® 1/2" Infinaé™ CarbonLow™ Gypsum Boards manufactured at the Montreal facility.
The PCR requires the use of a 10% installation waste scenario when actual installation data are unavailable. Since no site-specific installation data currently exist and installation practices can vary considerably among contractors, CertainTeed has limited influence over installation-related impacts. In addition, the use of internally recycled gypsum helps reduce overall environmental impacts by decreasing the demand for virgin raw materials and associated upstream burdens.
Although the manufacturing stage (A3) contributes a relatively small portion of the product's cradle-to-grave Global Warming Potential (GWP), it was identified as the primary opportunity for impact reduction because it is directly within the manufacturer's control. The reduction in environmental impacts is primarily driven by the transition from fossil fuel-based manufacturing to electrified production powered by renewable electricity. By replacing natural gas with hydroelectricity in Québec, the project significantly reduces direct (Scope 1) emissions associated with energy-intensive manufacturing processes. Further reductions are achieved through the implementation of multiple heat recovery systems, enhanced energy-efficient plant design, and improved process control strategies, which collectively lower overall energy demand and optimize operational performance. These improvements are expected to increase manufacturing energy efficiency, resulting in meaningful reductions in environmental impacts while maintaining product performance and production capacity.
LCIA results are relative expressions and do not predict impacts on category endpoints, the exceeding of thresholds, safety margins or risks. EPDs are comparable only when they follow the same PCR, functional unit and system boundary. The full EPD (PDF) contains the methodology, scenario assumptions and verification statement.
