Product description

GlasRoc® Sheathing Infinaé™ CarbonLow™ is an advanced exterior drywall sheathing panel engineered for sustainability and durability.

Available in 1/2" (12.7 mm) and 5/8" Type X (15.9 mm) thicknesses, the panel incorporates a non-combustible gypsum core reinforced with fibreglass face and back mats. This advanced construction provides exceptional strength, dimensional stability, and resistance to moisture, mould, and fire. Similar to the proven technology used in GlasRoc® specialty gypsum products, the embedded fibreglass mat reinforcement enhances durability and helps maintain panel integrity, even when exposed to challenging environmental conditions.

Designed for exterior sheathing and soffit applications, GlasRoc Infinaé CarbonLow is approved for use in UL/ULC fire-rated assemblies, and is compatible with EIFS, stucco systems, traditional cladding, and air barrier assemblies. It is GREENGUARD Gold certified and meets key building codes including IBC, IRC, and NBCC.

Recommended uses include commercial and residential projects with sustainability goals or lower carbon emission requirements. It is a tested air barrier material per ASTM E2178 and can be used in conjunction with air barrier components as part of an assembly per ASTM E2357. It is also approved as a substrate for major EIFS manufacturers, stucco systems, exterior ceilings, soffits, and curved applications.

Interpretation

Based on the results of the life cycle assessment model, the environmental impacts of GlasRoc® Sheathing Infinaé™ CarbonLow™ are primarily driven by the raw material, installation, and raw material transportation life cycle stages. Raw materials account for approximately 47% of the product's Global Warming Potential, with the glass mat representing the largest contributor within the raw material stage due to its energy-intensive production requirements.

Installation is also a notable contributor to the overall cradle-to-grave environmental impacts. In accordance with the applicable Product Category Rules (PCR), a 10% installation waste scenario is applied when actual installation data are unavailable. Because installation practices can vary significantly among contractors and project types, CertainTeed has limited influence over installation-related impacts. However, the use of internally recycled gypsum helps reduce overall environmental burdens by decreasing the demand for virgin raw materials and associated upstream emissions.

Although the manufacturing stage (A3) contributes a relatively small share of the product's total cradle-to-grave GWP, it represents the primary opportunity for impact reduction because it is directly controlled by the manufacturer. The reduction in environmental impacts is primarily driven by the transition from fossil fuel-based manufacturing to electrified production powered by renewable electricity. By replacing natural gas with hydroelectricity in Québec, the project significantly reduces direct (Scope 1) emissions associated with energy-intensive manufacturing processes.

Additional reductions are achieved through the implementation of multiple heat recovery systems, enhanced energy-efficient plant design, and advanced process control strategies that collectively reduce energy consumption and optimize operational performance. Together, these initiatives are expected to improve manufacturing energy efficiency resulting in substantial reductions in embodied carbon while maintaining product quality, durability, and production capacity.

LCIA results are relative expressions and do not predict impacts on category endpoints, the exceeding of thresholds, safety margins or risks. EPDs are comparable only when they follow the same PCR, functional unit and system boundary. The full EPD (PDF) contains the methodology, scenario assumptions and verification statement.
