Product description

This cradle-to-gate study evaluates the potential environmental impacts of a single product manufactured by Zeolite Composites, LLC at their Victorville, CA facility: 20-Mesh Clinoptilolite Zeolite. It has a density of 2,300 kg/m³.

Interpretation

Statements herein only relate to environmental aspects that exist or are likely to be realized. The LCA results demonstrate that raw materials (A1) are the dominant contributor across impact categories, particularly for global warming potential (GWP), accounting for roughly 87% of total emissions, primarily due to the plastic pail packaging.

Raw Materials (A1) contribute more than 85% of GWP, mostly due to the packaging material used.

Transportation (A2) contributes roughly 12% of GWP

Manufacturing (A3) contributes less than 1% of GWP due to the ease of screening the zeolite, using limited energy.

Key Findings:

If the packaging were to be excluded, transportation (A2) would have the largest impact on emissions, due to the distance from the mine to the facility.

Collection and screening of the zeolite are relatively low drivers of emissions, utilizing some diesel for the collection and electricity for the screening machine.

LCIA results are relative expressions and do not predict impacts on category endpoints, the exceeding of thresholds, safety margins or risks. EPDs are comparable only when they follow the same PCR, functional unit and system boundary. The full EPD (PDF) contains the methodology, scenario assumptions and verification statement.
