Product description
The products are polypropylene fibers used for reinforcing cementitious materials. They consist of two different lengths, 32 mm and 40 mm, with the same chemical composition.
Products included:
Adfil®Strux 3040, 3032, 90/40, 75/32, 85/50, Adfil®Durus, BT50
Interpretation
Polypropylene production is the dominant contributor to the global warming potential (GWP), due to its crude‑oil‑based production and associated carbon‑intensive processes. Polypropylene, HDPE, and electricity consumption contribute more than 10% each to the GWP. In contrast, all other raw materials and manufacturing processes contribute less than 10% to GWP for Adfil Construction Fibers: Adfil®Strux & Adfil®Durus.
Electricity, natural gas, and packaging drive the modest impacts in Module A3 but remain minor relative to the polypropylene granulate used in Module A1.
Given this imbalance in contribution, Saint-Gobain Construction Chemicals should prioritize supplier collaboration and engagement specifically on polypropylene feedstocks. Improving data quality, pushing for lower‑carbon PP sources, transitioning to alternative chemistries where feasible, or encouraging supplier‑level decarbonization (e.g., renewable energy, energy efficiency, or lower‑impact crude oil inputs) would yield the most meaningful reductions in the product’s overall GW
LCIA results are relative expressions and do not predict impacts on category endpoints, the exceeding of thresholds, safety margins or risks. EPDs are comparable only when they follow the same PCR, functional unit and system boundary. The full EPD (PDF) contains the methodology, scenario assumptions and verification statement.
