Product description
The Solar Gard range of architectural clear and solar control safety and security films enhances the performance of existing glass and facades in homes and commercial buildings. These films improve overall security, increase visual comfort, enhance thermal comfort, and reduce the need for cooling.
Solar Gard safety and security films consist of multiple layers of clear or metallized polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The metallized PET incorporates a proprietary combination of metal(s) applied through a process called sputtering, which gives each film its unique solar properties and appearance. This method ensures superior density and bond strength compared to vapor deposition and other metallization techniques. All films have a scratch-resistant coating specifically designed for their installation position, protecting the films surface during installation and cleaning for the life of the film. Solar Gard safety and security films are available in a wide range of performance levels, appearances and shades to meet diverse customer needs and specifications.

All Solar Gard films undergo rigorous inspection and endurance testing to ensure long-lasting durability and customer satisfaction. Additionally, Solar Gard offers warranties, covering a lifetime for residential applications.
In total this EPD covers eight (8) internal safety and security films, and one (1) external safety and security film. The reference product for the group of products covered in this EPD is Solar Gard ARMORCOAT 8 MIL SILVER 20 (supplied as roll of 1.52 m / 60” wide and 30.5 m / 100 ft long). The variability between any of the products covered in this EPD and the reference product ARMORCOAT 8 MIL SILVER 20 remains within 10% for GWP, as required by the governing PCR.
The Performance Specifications table in the Further Information section provides an overview of the solar control film product references covered in this EPD.
Solar Gard can provide detailed data for any product covered by this EPD, if requested.

Interpretation
For GWP, the majority of contribution to this environmental impact is from the production modules (A1 – A3). This is primarily because the sources of greenhouse gas emissions are predominant in this part of the life cycle. CO2 emissions are generated upstream from the production of electricity and is also released on site by the combustion diesel and natural gas. Other sections of the life cycle also contribute to the GWP. However, the production modules contribute to over 80% of the contribution. Emissions from waste disposal in A5 (disposal after installation) and C (transport and disposal at the end of life) generate the second highest percentage of greenhouse gas emissions.
LCIA results are relative expressions and do not predict impacts on category endpoints, the exceeding of thresholds, safety margins or risks. EPDs are comparable only when they follow the same PCR, functional unit and system boundary. The full EPD (PDF) contains the methodology, scenario assumptions and verification statement.
