Interpretation
THP ScanJet Pro 3000 S3 can be used in several applications, the functional unit was calculated based on an office use case. In this use scenario, it’s assumed that the scanner can scan a maximum of 259,000 images per year, or 995 images per day, 5 days a week. The model represents typical impacts for an average device sold in the North American market, and it assumes a scanner lifetime of 5 years, based on HP expert data. It also assumes that the final product is assembled manually, thus no energy consumption was reflected in this stage. The end-of-life treatment for the scanner and mechanical consumables represents a best case for electronics recycling, i.e. separation of bulk parts, shredding, and incineration of electronics. (No credits are applied for materials or energy recovered at end of life, consistent with the recycled content, a.k.a. cut-off EoL allocation methodology.) As LCI models for uncontrolled recycling/disposal of products are not available, this case was not considered in this study. Following the cut-off end-of-life allocation approach, materials sent to recycling and energy recovered from incineration fall outside the system boundary. Only the impacts (and no credits) associated with the separation, shredding, waste treatment (incineration or landfilling) and transport steps are shown in the end-of-life results.
LCIA results are relative expressions and do not predict impacts on category endpoints, the exceeding of thresholds, safety margins or risks. EPDs are comparable only when they follow the same PCR, functional unit and system boundary. The full EPD (PDF) contains the methodology, scenario assumptions and verification statement.
